Winter operations

Plows, brooms and blowers on your own runways and aprons, in the weather you choose.

Overview

Snow removal

Winter equipment is the hardest fleet to train on. It is only used for part of the year, the combinations are long, and the conditions that matter are the ones you cannot schedule. AVOPSIM reproduces your winter units with their specialist controls on your runways and taxiways, with snow, ice, fog and night set per mission, so recurrent training happens in September rather than during the first event.

Use cases

What trainees practice.

Each item is a mission type your instructors can assign, repeat and score. All of them run on your own airfield.

Runway clearing

Plow, broom and air blast in a single pass.

Long combinations

Handling and turning a tractor with towed equipment.

Formation work

Clearing patterns with other units.

Reduced traction

Braking and cornering on contaminated surfaces.

Lights and signs

Clearance from edge lights and signage while clearing.

Airfield closures

Working around active and closed runways.

Deicing

Aircraft deicing has its own program. See Deicing operations.

Night and blowing snow

Low visibility on the runway.

How a mission runs

How a mission runs.

  1. 01The instructor sets season, precipitation, visibility and surface contamination, plus any aircraft or vehicle traffic.
  2. 02Operators drive the modeled winter units with the specialist controls of each vehicle: blade, broom and blower.
  3. 03Runway and taxiway lighting, signage and hold points are those of your airport, so route discipline is trained at the same time.
  4. 04Missions score coverage, clearance from lights and signs, hold point compliance and coordination with other units.
